Menaggio Shelter
Menaggio, centre of the western Lario shore, territory of the very ancient (the first visitors were the Gauls) offers stimulating excursions on its surrounding mountains.
In the town of Plesio you can visit the trenches of the Crocetta dating back to the First World War, we are a stones throw from the Madonna of Breglia Sanctuary.
The climb to the Menaggio Shelter (1400 m. C.A.I.) in the Plesio territory, holiday spot known more for the Chiarella springs than anything; is certainly a destination that will gratify novices and even the most expert excursionists. The path is not particularly difficult, maximum caution and respect for this extraordinary place is always recommended.
The paths to reach the Menaggio Shelter are various – the most frequented and fastest begins at the mountains overlooking Breglia at a height of 749 m.
We recommend mountain clothing and shoes, as the weather may change quickly.
From an altitude of nearly 1000 m, after having left the unpaved road and having entered the valle di Greno, immediately to the left begins a easy path which, traced out in a highly fascinating ambiance, in less than an hour leads to the shelter.
From here, the view of Lario, Monte Legnone, Corni di Canzo and Grigne is incomparable.
The Menaggio Shelter is the departure base for the challenging ferrata(a route filled with ropes and metal ladders, etc.), to be embarked upon only with the equipment and the knowledge that this type of climb requires, as well as for the beautiful and easy excursions to the top of Monte Grona (1736 m.), to the chapel of St. Amate (1623 m.) placed on the grassy saddleback of the same name, on the ridge of Bregagno, and the rounded 2107 m. summit can be reached in nearly 2 hours.
