History Mandello Lario Although there are no certa in data on the origin of Mandello, the territory was probably inhabited in the pre-Roman periodo There was a military defence starting from the 3rd century B.e. when the Roman Empire was trying to extend its commerciai and military boundaries beyond the Alps and used Lake Como to get to the Settimo and Splugen passeso However there are no visible traces of the Roman times as far as buildings are concerned. In the medieval period this territory was first subject to the Lombardic domination, then it was fought for by Milan and Como and finally subjected to the Visconti family starting from 1336 (in the 12th century Mandello, as well as most of the villages in Northern ltaly, became a free commune with its own meetings and magistrates). In the 16th century, when the Spanish rule started in Lombardy, the feud Mandello was ceded to the Sfondrati family, who kept it for about 3 centuries, although they lived in their palaces in Bellagio and Fiumelatte. During the following centuries, particularly after the street on the cost was built (the current provincial road no. 72) and inaugurated in 1832, and after the Lecco-Colico railway was built and finished in 1894, an industrialisation process took piace, at first along the Meria and Roggia streams (the latter is an artificial canal already existing in the 18th century) and later elsewhere. Mandello Lario is also the seat of Moto Guzzi, founded in 1921. |
