Brunate - Lake Como

Brunate's Cable Railway

Brunate is a very popular, small holiday centre. Upon entrance to the town you immediately notice the signs for the cable railway station, on the left is an incredible panorama of lake Como, while the alpine arch and the Brianza with its lakes may be admired from the large piazza behind the station.

Many trips depart from Brunate: just 2 km way is Saint Maurizio, where in 1927 the Voltaic Lighthouse (a 29 m. octagonal tower), visible by most of Lake Como, and from which opens a very vast panorama of the Alps and Mt. Rosa.

If you continue straight, after a short time you will arrive at the Capanna C.A.O. (Club Alpino Operaio) from here if you take the lower road you will reach the Boletto, Bolettone, and San Primo chalets, in that order.

On November 11, 1894 , the first cable railway reached the town of Brunate from the Como station, in the immediate vicinity of the lake. An evocative journey, traced in a straight line on a hillside slope with a maximum slope of 55% on a 1084 meter track, currently runs at 6 minutes and 30 seconds, with the possibility of two intermediate stops: Como Alta and Carescione by request.

The Como-Brunate cable railway is unique to its kind in Europe and is able to carry the tourist in one breath, form the shore of Lake Como to the balcony of the Alps.
